The Municipality of Mahmudia announced that the breach which appeared last week in the Carasuhat dike has been covered by about 70%, so the water flow in the section has decreased significantly, according to Agerpres.
The mayor of Mahmudia, Ion Șerpescu, stated that for now he cannot estimate the total surface of agricultural crops affected after the Carasuhat dike broke on Thursday, June 8, due to the high level of the Danube in recent weeks and the waves created by boats.
"We brought almost 600 tons of stone there and covered about 70% of the breach in the dike. The water flow there is at least 50% lower compared to yesterday (Sunday). I cannot estimate the damages, but there are about 2,000 hectares of agricultural land there and not the entire area was affected," mentioned mayor Ion Șerpescu.
He also said that a commission formed of representatives of the county authorities is currently evaluating the damages to agricultural crops, while interventions at the Carasuhat-Mahmudia dike continue in parallel.
Estimates made at the end of last week by the National Administration "Romanian Waters" (ANAR) showed that almost 200 hectares of agricultural land exploited by private companies were flooded in the area.
The dike, which separates an agricultural enclosure renatured several years ago from agricultural land leased to private companies, broke on Thursday, and by the end of last week county authorities had intervened with about 500 sacks, 80 kilograms of plastic sheeting, and 25 tons of stone.
According to ANAR, as early as April the institution's specialists had recommended that the Mahmudia Municipality consolidate the dike, given that it was affected along a length of 2.4 kilometers, in several points, at proportions of 30% and 70%.
There are no residential houses in the area.
