Contract for the execution of ecological reconstruction works 27 / 16.05.2022

The project is implemented entirely on the territory of two Natura 2000 sites (the community importance site ROSCI0065 Danube Delta, the special bird protection area ROSPA0031 Danube Delta and the Razim-Sinoie Complex) and within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, in the hydrographic units (natural aquatic complexes) Șontea-Fortuna (northern area) and Gorgova-Uzlina (southern area), on the territory of Maliuc and Sf. Gheorghe.

Through its objectives, results, and actions, the project fully follows the principle of biodiversity protection.

The main activity of the project is to improve the conservation status of the European mink, through ecological reconstruction of ecosystems that are part of the Natura 2000 sites ROSPA0031 Danube Delta and Razim-Sinoie Complex, and ROSCI0065 Danube Delta, within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (RBDD).

To create suitable habitats for the mink, the following works will be carried out:

1. Construction of 33 elevated platforms, positioned in the Șontea-Fortuna Natural Aquatic Complex on the left/right bank of the Fortuna Lake Ring Canal, within Maliuc.

2. Revitalization works on the islands, consisting of dredging to create new canals deep enough to ensure optimal water levels during medium and low flows of the Danube over a long period, and using the dredged material to build a dike (platform) within Sf. Gheorghe.

The works carried out under this project also actively contribute to reducing flood risk by:

• Creating new canals deep enough to maintain optimal water levels during medium and low flows of the Danube over time.

• Using dredged material to build a dike (platform) in Sf. Gheorghe.
